Police identify body found floating in Catawba River
Police late Wednesday confirmed that a body pulled from the Catawba River was that of Janet Elizabeth Simpson, a 56-year-old woman missing since Dec. 5.
Simpson, a mortgage broker, was last seen leaving the Liberty East Restaurant on East Independence Boulevard. Her car was discovered days later on Parkdale Drive in Belmont, not far from the Catawba.
Belmont Police told the Charlotte Observer that clothing on the body matched the description of clothing worn by Simpson.
Authorities retrieved her body Wednesday morning after a homeowner found it floating in the water behind his home on Amos Smith Road, just west of Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
The Mecklenburg County medical examiner has not determined a cause of death.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide detective or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
