What appeared to be a routine traffic accident on N. Tryon Street early Monday quickly turned into a double homicide investigation.
Police were called to the intersection of N. Tryon and 24th streets around 2:30 a.m. after a car traveling inbound struck a utility pole. When officers arrived they found three of the car’s four occupants shot – two of them fatally. The third victim’s injuries were not life threatening.
Police did not immediately release the victims’ names. A fourth person in the car, apparently uninjured, was taken to police headquarters for questioning.
Based on initial reports, police were looking for an older-model SUV, possibly white, that may have been involved in the incident.
Because of the immediate investigation, police warned that the intersection would be closed through the Monday morning rush hour and advised commuters to find alternate routes, possibly N Graham Street or The Plaza.
Anyone with the information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide detective or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
