Police investigate school board threats
By NewsChannel 36
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating at least two threatening letters sent to school board members following last week's controversial school closure vote, NewsChannel 36 has reported.
On Friday, board member Kaye McGarry received a threatening letter. CMS board chairman Eric Davis got his on Saturday.
"In the letter its clear and obvious they are being targeted because of the way they voted on the school issue," the television station quoted Milton Harris with CMPD's Criminal Intelligence Unit as saying.
WBTV reported a third threat directed at the entire board a few days ago.
Meanwhile, former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory on Monday told WBT radio that he believed chants of "No justice, no peace," used by local NAACP president Kojo Nantambu at a CMS board meeting may have created a climate that led to the threats.
McCrory said the chant encourages violence.
Nantambu denied McCrory's characterization of the words, telling reporters the chant expresses a commitment to seek change.
