Police today are investigating the death of 26-year-old Derek Dominick Roman, who was found shot inside his apartment Thursday evening.

Police were called around 6:30 p.m. to 8925 Lenox Pointe Drive at the Colonial Grand at Ayrsley apartment complex after a neighbor noticed a third-floor apartment door was open. The neighbor went inside and found Roman unresponsive.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The shooting occurred in the Steele Creek area in southwest Charlotte. Police went door to door asking neighbors if they had seen or heard anything suspicious.

The Charlotte Observer reported that friends of the victim cried outside the apartment building as police told them the news. They declined to comment.
