Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating the Saturday night shooting death of a 44-year-old man on Minnesota Road in west Charlotte.

The victim was identified as Tony Perri Alston.

Police say Alston was shot just after midnight in the 3200 block of Minnesota Road.

Police called to the location to investigate a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. Upon arrival they found Alston lying the grass suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He died at Carolinas Medical Center-Main.

Police said the investigation is in its early stages. Witnesses told police they saw a black male wearing a gray T-shirt fleeing the scene.
