Police: Local motel was an "open-air drug market"
Police have arrested 16 people in connection to a drug and prostitution sting at the Brookshire Inn Motel on Brookshire Boulevard.
The investigation began Sept. 1 after numerous residents complained. Police also reviewed the number of times officers were called to the location, and investigators staked out the motel to watch for illegal activity.
According to a police statement Wednesday, several rooms at the motel were being used as a “safe haven for criminal activity.” Police described parts of the motel as an “open air drug market with a clear chain of command structured with a single leader in charge, a second in command and several lower level dealers.”
The drug operation ran 24 hours a day, seven days a week, police said. Crack cocaine sales there were estimated at $25,000 a week. This did not include the sale of other drugs such as heroin, ecstasy, and marijuana. Police said they also observed a “high volume of prostitution activity.”
Police said that during the investigation they bought illegal drugs 17 times from 15 individuals, which led to 71 charges being filed.
