Police make arrest after fatal shooting
A 27-year-old Belmont man was arrested and charged with murder Friday evening after a shooting in the University City area left one person dead.
Police early Saturday had not released the victim’s name pending notification of relatives.
Charged with the killing was Clay Martin Collison, who was booked into the Mecklenburg
jail. In addition to the murder charge, Collison also was charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of heroin.
Police said they received a call for service shortly before 7 p.m. in reference to a shooting in a shopping center parking lot between N. Tryon Street and University City Boulevard. Upon arrival found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Police say the shooting happened during a struggle between Collison and the victim. Collison reportedly fled on foot to an nearby strip mall where he was arrested a short time later. A weapon was recovered on scene, police said.
Investigators said the shooting did not appear to be random and that Collison and the victim knew one another.
