Six years ago just days before Christmas, Justin Ervin was leaving a convenience store in northwest Charlotte when he saw three men assaulting his 17-year-old girlfriend who had stayed outside in the car. When Ervin, 20, tried to intervene, he was pistol-whipped by the assailants and shot twice. He died less than an hour later at Carolinas Medical Center.
On Saturday, police arrested 32-year-old Tyrice Lavar Boyd and charged him with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
He was booked into the Mecklenburg jail without bond.

Police did not say what evidence linked Boyd to the Dec. 20, 2005, killing, which happened just before 1 a.m. outside an Xpress Mart in the 4200 block of Glenwood Drive in the Freedom Division.
Mecklenburg jail records show Boyd had been arrested at least six times since 2009, mainly for driving with a revoked license. He was arrested in March 2011 and charged with two counts of first-degree rape and one count of first-degree kidnapping. He was released seven days later. Qcitymetro could not immediately determine the status of those charges.
Police said they would continue to investigate the 2005 killing. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
