Police make arrest in Tuesday evening killing
Police today arrested a 55-year-old man and charged him with murder in connection with
a Tuesday evening shooting on Rozzelles Ferry Road in west Charlotte.
John Calvin Hornes, who will mark his 56th birthday this week, was arrested in Statesville and charged with killing Cleamard Chisholm, 58.
Police said the shooting took place on the front porch of a home in the 2100 block of Rozzelles Ferry.
According to police reports, Chisholm was shot in the upper leg around 9:35 p.m. He ran to a nearby home before collapsing in the yard. A resident inside the house called 911. Chisholm died less than an hour later at Carolinas Medical Center.
Based on initial witness statements, police said Chisholm and Hornes were “horse playing” when the situation escalated. Witnesses told police the shooter left and returned a short time later with a gun. After shooting Chisholm, police said, the suspect fled in a white pickup truck.
Chisholm’s death was the city’s 30th homicide reported in 2010, up from 15 this time last year, which saw one of the lowest homicide counts on record.
Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
