Police make second arrest in homicide case

Police on Thursday arrested a second suspected in the Tuesday night shooting death of 20-year-old Caleb Coppenhaver in west Charlotte.

Eighteen-year-old Cornell Blackwell was taken into custody shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday at a hotel off Sunset Road. He was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and armed robbery.

Coppenhaver was shot near the rear of a vacant house in the 2500 block of Columbus Circle, just south of Freedom Drive. He died at Carolinas Medical Center a short time later.

Witnesses described the suspects as two black males, one thin and one heavy, both about 6-feet tall. Police said the shooters and the victim knew each other.

  Campton Wolfe

Police on Wednesday arrested the first suspect, Campton Conway Wolfe, 24, and charged him with murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and armed robbery.

Both suspects were being held in the Mecklenburg jail.
