Police: Man kills his mother in custody dispute
Police on Thursday arrested a 32-year-old man and charged him with the shooting death
of his mother.
Ada Adams, 63, died at Carolina Medical Center after being shot in her home around 11:16 a.m. in the 1600 block of Montana Drive, just north of uptown.
Police charged her son, John Lee Adams Jr., with the shooting. Police said the shooting stemmed from an ongoing custody dispute over the suspect’s child – who was home when the incident occurred.
According to police reports, the teenager called 911 to report that his father had shot his (the teen’s) grandmother while they were in the kitchen. When officers arrived, they found Ada Adams lying on the kitchen floor, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.
A neighbor, quoted in the Charlotte Observer, described Ada Adams as "a good churchgoing lady, a real singing lady."
A firearm was recovered inside the home, and the victim’s son was taken into custody.
