Police name victim, suspect in Saturday homicide

Police today identified the victim of Saturday night’s homicide as 22-year old Clarence James Carter.

Authorities also were requesting the public’s help in locating a suspect, 30-year-old Sidney O’Neal Mays.

Mays was described as a black male, about 5-feet, nine-inches tall and weighing 175-180 pounds. He is believed to be bald with a goatee and no front teeth. He was last seen wearing a gray tank top and blue jeans, possibly wearing a black ball cap with white lettering.

Police are investigating a shooting late Saturday in north Charlotte that left one man dead.

The incident was reported to police around 8:32 p.m. in the 500 block of Polk Street. Authorities were withholding the victim’s name pending family notification.

Witnesses told police the shooting may have been related to a neighborhood dispute.

When officers arrived, they found the victim lying on the ground with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at Carolinas Medical Center.

Police said the shooter and victim knew each other.

Several individuals, including a “person of interest” were taken to police headquarters for questioning.
