The man suspected of running into a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer late Thursday night was arrested Friday in Georgia and awaits extradition to North Carolina.
Ivory Chappell, 28, who has a history of altercations with police, was arrested Friday morning by DeKalb County officers outside Atlanta, apparently without incident.
The Charlotte Observer reports that Chappell twice has been found guilty in North Carolina with resisting a public officer, once for assaulting a government official, and once for speeding to elude arrest. He also has convictions on drug charges and for jail escape. Burglary and grand larceny charges are pending against him in Fairfield County, S.C.

Police on Friday were searching for a man suspected of hitting a CMPD officer with his car while fleeing the scene of a domestic dispute.
The event occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of an Extended Stay America motel in the 6000 block of Nations Ford Road. Police had gone to the location to investigate a report of larceny from autos.
When officers arrived, they saw a couple who appeared to be arguing. The man was holding a baby.
As the officer approached, according to a police report, the man dropped the child and ran for a white Dodge Charger, striking Officer Chris Kunz as he fled. The Charlotte Observer reported that the officer was thrown over the hood of the car.
Kunz’ partner, who was not named in the report, fired multiple shots at the fleeing suspect, but it was unknown whether the suspect or the car was struck.
On the police radio, an officer could be heard screaming, "Shots fired! Officer down!" the Observer reported.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and N.C. Highway Patrol troopers searched for the suspect overnight but failed to find him.
CMPD Chief Monroe said investigators think they know who the suspect is, but he declined to give the man's name.
Officers were searching for a black man with a mohawk hairstyle, possibly driving a white late-model Dodge Charger with a damaged hood. The Charger is believed to have fled onto I-77.
Kunz was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Carolina Medical Center. The child also was treated at the hospital, but the extent of its injuries was not disclosed.
Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
