Police officer shoots 15-year-old son of stabbing victim
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer shot the 15-year-old son of a woman who had
been stabbed minutes earlier by another male.
Police said the teen was "in no way associated" with the attack on his mother.
The boy was reported in stable condition at Carolinas Medical Center early Sunday. His mother was being treated at the same hospital for stab wounds that police described as non-life threatening.
Police did not immediately release the name of the mother and son, nor did they immediately release the name of the officer who shot the teen.
The shooting marked the second time in three days that a Charlotte-Mecklenburg officer had shot someone. On Thursday, an officer shot and killed David Sebaste, 48, after the two exchanged gunfire outside Sebaste’s home in south Charlotte near Woodlawn Road.
Saturday’s shooting happened in the 4400 block of Brandie Glen Drive just south of West W.T Harris Boulevard in north Charlotte. Police were called to the area around 9:30 p.m. to investigate a report that a woman had been stabbed.
As officers arrived, the woman met them outside and said she feared that her attacker was still inside the house. The officers called paramedics and continued to question the woman, according to police.
As officers began walking toward the place where the stabbing occurred, they were approached by “a couple of subjects in the roadway,” a CMPD statement said. Officers saw that one of the subjects, later identified as the stabbing victim’s son, had a shiny object in his hand.
“Officers began giving verbal commands to the subject to drop the object,” the report stated. “As the subject continued to approach in the officer’s direction, the officer discharged his weapon.”
Police said “multiple” bullets struck the teen.
The police account did not state what the shiny object was that the teen was said to have had in his hand.
"It appears that the son was on scene very upset," the police statement said, “and we are investigating his actions and how those actions were perceived by the officers at the time of the shooting.”
Police later arrested 39-year-old Bruce Jenkins (photo above) and charged him with stabbing the boy’s mother.
