Police make arrests in double homicide
Police arrested two men in an Alabama hotel Wednesday and charged them with a double homicide that occurred last month on N. Tryon Street.
Luis Mendez, 22, and Ismael Mendoza, 25, were arrested in the town of Shorter, just east of Montgomery. They were charged with the March 21 killings of Luis Aguilar-Amezcua, 21, and Omar Mendez De La Cruz, 19.
The victims were found shot to death inside a car that crashed into a utility pole. A third man inside the car was wounded in the shooting and a fourth was questioned by police.
Investigators have not disclose a potential motive.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, assisted by the FBI, federal immigration officers and Alabama law enforcement, flew to Shorter Wednesday evening and made the arrests. Both suspects were being held in the Montgomery city jail awaiting a court date and extradition proceedings.
CMPD spokesman Robert Fey said investigators were tipped off in the case after officer Danny Hernandez of the Independence Division appealed for help on a local radio station. Fey said Hernandez has developed a special relationship with the city’s Latino community.
Despite the two arrests, Fey said the investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS to speak with a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
