The toy drive begins today (10/28) and ends Dec. 20. Donors may drop off new toys, books, electronics or Thanksgiving contributions at DaShoppe Barbershop, 3115 N. Sharon Amity Road. Thanksgiving donations must be received by Nov. 20.

Ed Sanders, a former Charlotte principal who helped integrate local schools in the 1950s, will be honored Friday (10/29) when Rocky River High School names its new media center in his honor.

A portrait of Sanders will be unveiled during the noon ribbon-cutting ceremony.

In 1955, Sanders oversaw the merger of Central and Tech high schools. Three years after Brown vs. Board of Education, he was instrumental in peacefully enrolling black student Gus Roberts into the all-white student body at Central in 1957.

Under his administration, the district’s first black teacher, Brumit Delaine, entered a classroom at Garinger High, the first step toward integrating black and white faculty.

Sanders and members of his family are scheduled to attend.
