A rare photo showing two slave boys was found in the attic of a Charlotte home and sold for $30,000.

Along with the photo was a document detailing the sale of “John” – one of the boys shown in the photo -- for $1,150.

The rare find was reported Thursday by the Associated Press. Historians believe the picture was taken during the Civil War area. It is highly unusual, the historians said, to find photos showing slave children.

"It's a very difficult and poignant piece of American history," Will Stapp, a photographic historian and founding curator of the National Portrait Gallery's photographs department at the Smithsonian Institution, was quoted as saying. "What you are looking at when you look at this photo are two boys who were victims of that history."

The haunting image shows two young boys, barefoot and wearing ragged clothes, perched on a barrel. The one on the left is believed to have been John.

The document detailing John’s sale sold for $20,000. The document and photo were purchased by Keya Morgan, a New York collector.
