Robbery suspect fleeing police is injured in crash
A robbery suspect fleeing from police was injured Tuesday in a car crash on W. Tyvola Road near Billy Graham Parkway.
The incident began shortly after 4 p.m. when the victim of a June 10 robbery called 911 from a Walmart on S. Tryon Street to report that he had just seen the man who robbed him.
The victim told police that the suspect, a black male, was traveling in a Saturn along with another black male. The victim also gave police the number of a N.C. license plate.
Officers patrolling the area spotted the car at a gas station on S. Tryon Street and attempted to stop it when the driver sped away. Police gave chase onto Tryon Street and then onto Tyvola Road.
Shortly after the Saturn crossed Cascade Point Boulevard, it collided with a dump truck on Tyvola Road and came to rest in dense vegetation. The driver was thrown from the car.
Both occupants were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. The dump truck driver was not hurt.
Police say the Saturn was stolen in an armed robbery on June 19 on Kennesaw Drive. The victim of that robbery, a delivery driver for Domino’s Pizza, was robbed at gunpoint but was not injured.
Police did not immediately release the names of the injured men.
