Robbery-rape suspect arrested in Ga.
A man identified by police as a suspect in last week’s robbery and rape cases in Dilworth and Myers Park was arrested early Monday in a Macon, Ga., hotel.
Jaunton Carter, 29, was taken into custody around 3 a.m.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team
(VCAT) developed leads on Carter’s whereabouts over the weekend. CMPD worked with Macon police and the U.S. Marshals Service to arrest Carter, who police say had fled Charlotte in a car stolen from the Grier Heights community.
While observing the hotel, police said, officers saw Carter approach the vehicle, but he fled before officers could arrest him. Macon police, K-9 units, the Georgia State Patrol and members of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force searched for several hours, finally locating Carter hiding under a house.
Police say DNA evidence linked Carter to a pair of incidents Feb. 22 in which a man rear-ended two vehicles, each driven by women. When the drivers got out to investigate, the man allegedly kidnapped and raped one woman and robbed the second.
The incidents happened after 2 a.m., about 30 minutes apart, as the women were returning to their homes.
Carter faces robbery, kidnapping, rape and felony hit-and-run charges when he is brought back to Charlotte.
