S.C. black political leaders demand answers from Haley
Members of the S.C. Legislative Black Caucus have requested a meeting with Gov. Nikki Haley to discuss how her plans to slash the state budget might impact African American state workers.
State Sen. Robert Ford (D-Charleston) sent a letter to Haley Friday requesting the meeting. He said the LBC is concerned that budget cuts might fall disproportionately on blacks. They also want to ensure that African Americans will benefit from the governor's economic development plan.
Rob Godfrey, Haley's press secretary, was quoted Tuesday in the Post and Courier of Charleston as saying the governor would meet with caucus members.
Ford and other LBC members have criticized Haley in the past for failing to appoint more minorities to her cabinet. The governor's 16-member cabinet has two black directors and four women, the Charleston paper reported.
