Neighbors picket neighbor over Confederate flag
What happens when a white neighbor moves into an historically black community and starts flying a Confederate flag in front of her home?
Residents of the Brownsville neighborhood in the South Carolina town of Summerville decided to march in protest.
According to the News and Courier of Charleston, about 70 people marched Saturday in front of the home of Annie Chambers Caddell, 50, who moved into the neighborhood in June. About 30 supporters -- including a black man dressed in a Confederate Civil War uniform -- showed up at Caddell's home with more Confederate flags.
Since the controversy began, about 200 of her neighbors have signed a petition asking Caddell to take down the flag. So far she has refused. Caddell says her ancestors fought for the Confederacy and that the emblem is about heritage, not hate.
"That flag means a lot more to me than anything I can describe to you," she was quoted as saying. "It's my heritage and it's my right.”
