SC State students will pay more next year
Tuition expenses at SC State University will increase 4 percent next year.
That equates to an extra $180 for in-state students, or $4,629 per semester. Out-of-state students will see a $9,085 tuition payment per semester, an increase of $350.
State funding to the Orangeburg, S.C., school was slashed by 15 percent for the 2010-2011 academic year, the latest of several state cuts.
The board of trustees voted the increase last week.
“Choosing to raise tuition for students is always a last alternative,” SC State President George E. Cooper said. “However, considering a volatile economy and the resulting effects on funding for the University, balancing the budget is always an arduous task.”
In addition to a tuition hike, food services will increase by 1.6 percent, or an extra $24 per semester. However, housing costs will fall by $250 per semester for all students except those living in University Village Apartments or Andrew Hugine Suites.
