South Carolina State University will soon dedicate a new three-story science complex bearing the name of the school’s eighth president.

The Leroy Davis Sr. Research and Science Complex will house SC State’s Department of Biology and Physical Sciences and will include an office tower, research space, two auditoriums, five conference rooms and state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories.

The dedication is set for Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 2 p.m.

Davis, who served as the school’s president from 1996 to 2001, said he was honored to have the building name after him.

“It warms my heart to see this day come,” he said in a statement. “It’s an extremely high honor to have my name on this building and I will forever be indebted to the University for doing this.”

During Davis’ six-year tenure, he increased annual giving from $419,000 in 1996 to $2.1 in 2001.

Gov. appoints new SC State trustee
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has appointed Walter F. Johnson III to the SC State board of trustees, replacing Jackie Epps, who was appointed by former Gov. Mark Sanford.

Johnson is chairman of Eagle Group International Inc., a full-service consulting firm with civilian, federal and international practices. Within 10 years, Johnson built Eagle Group from a start-up to its current $150 million in annual revenue.

Johnson graduated from West Virginia State College and earned a master’s degree at the University of Missouri. He served as a senior vice president with the American Hospital Association and in the early 1990s was president and chief executive officer of Diversity in Health Management, a foundation-like organization devoted to increasing the number of minority managers in health services. He served in the military for 27 years and attained the rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, the highest grade that can be achieved in the Medical Service Corps.
