School board approves high-level appointments
The school board approved several high-level appointments on Tuesday, including a CMS chief information officer, two zone superintendents and five principals.
The appointments are:
Scott R. Muri -- chief information officer: Muri began his career as a teacher in Newland, N.C., before moving to Osceola County, Fla., school district. He moved to CMS in 2007 and was superintendent of the Northeast Zone. He holds a master’s degree in public school administration from Stetson University and a bachelor’s degree in intermediate education and middle school education from Wake Forest University.
Dawn R. Robinson -- Northeast Zone superintendent: Robinson comes to CMS from Miami-Dade County Public Schools, where she began her career as a teacher. She has served as an education consultant for CMS since 2007. She holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She earned her master’s degree in educational leadership and bachelor’s in education from the University of Miami. She has worked as a teacher, assistant principal and principal before becoming a consultant.
Charity E. Bell -- Central Secondary Zone superintendent: Bell began her career as a math teacher in Kinston, N.C., before moving to CMS as a principal intern at Zebulon B. Vance High in 1998. She went on to work in New Hanover and Lenoir County Schools before returning to CMS in 2005 as principal of West Mecklenburg High. In 2010, Bell became executive director of the Northeast Zone. She has a master’s in school administration from the UNC Charlotte, a bachelor’s degree in math from Chapel Hill and a teaching certificate from East Carolina University.
Nicole M. Priestly -- Central Elementary Zone director: Priestly comes to CMS from Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, where she most recently worked as principal at South Lake Elementary. She began her career as a Head Start teacher assistant before working as a teacher in Columbia, South Carolina. She went on to work in Alachua County Schools in Florida and Fulton County Schools in Georgia before moving to Maryland. She holds a doctorate from the University of Maryland. Her master’s degree is in teaching and her bachelor’s degree is in international relations, both from the University of South Carolina.
Paul Holden -- executive director for Family and Community Services and Parent University: Holden was director of student services with Catawba County Schools. He also worked for Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia, District School Board of Hillsborough County in Florida, District School Board of Pasco County in Florida and Iredell-Statesville Schools. He holds a doctorate from the University of South Florida in philosophy and a master’s in social work from Florida State University. Holden’s bachelor’s degree is from Georgetown University in sociology.
Monique Y. Davis -- J.H. Gunn Elementary principal: Davis served as the school’s interim principal since January 2010. She has a master’s degree in school administration from the UNC Charlotte and a bachelor’s in early childhood education from Winston-Salem State University. She began her career at Thomasboro Elementary in 1990. She has also worked as a teacher, assistant to the principal, literacy facilitator and principal intern in CMS.
Angela Grant -- Shamrock Gardens Elementary principal: She has a master’s degree in museum education from University of the Arts and a bachelor’s in African American studies from Rutgers University. She began her teaching career at Marie G. Davis Middle in 2002. She has since worked in CMS as a social studies resource teacher, middle school social studies coordinator, academic facilitator, resident principal and assistant principal. Most recently, she worked as the assistant principal at J.T. Williams Middle.
Alicia Giles Hash -- Cotswold Elementary principal: Hash holds a master’s in educational leadership from Winthrop University and a bachelor’s in elementary education from North Carolina A&T University. She began her career as a teacher in Winston-Salem before moving to CMS in 2004 as a teacher at Oakhurst Elementary. She has also worked as a principal intern in CMS before her most recent position as dean of students/academic facilitator at Lincoln Heights Elementary.
Kimberly C. Odom -- River Gate Elementary principal: Odom holds a master’s in educational leadership from the University of South Carolina and a master’s in counseling from Winthrop University. Her bachelor’s degree, also from Winthrop University, is in political science. Before coming to CMS in 2007 as assistant principal of Lake Wylie Elementary, Odom worked in Rock Hill and Chester, S.C. She has worked as teacher, counselor, assistant principal and interim principal before her most recent position as assistant principal at Sterling Elementary.
Brian F. Schultz -- Torrence Creek Elementary principal: Schultz comes to CMS from Cabarrus County, where he served as director of elementary education. He is pursuing a doctorate degree from the UNC Charlotte in curriculum and instruction, urban education. He has a master’s degree in school administration from the UNC Charlotte and a bachelor’s in elementary education from Purdue University. Schultz began his career in Indiana before moving to Cabarrus County in 2006. He has worked as a teacher and elementary school principal before becoming director of elementary education.
