School board makes 5 appointments
The school board on Tuesday approved the appointment of a zone superintendent and four principals.
The appointments are:
Kelly Gwaltney will lead the East Zone in CMS. She began her teaching career in Bessemer City as a math teacher before moving to CMS to teach math at West Mecklenburg High School in 1993. She also taught math in Gaston and Lincoln counties. She has worked as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in CMS, most recently leading Mallard Creek High School.
Rachael Neill was named principal at Quail Hollow Middle. A graduate of Davidson College and a Teach For America corps member, she joined CMS as a teacher of exceptional children in 2005. Neill also served as program director for Teach For America in Charlotte and spent the 2010-2011 school year as a resident principal at James Martin Middle School.
Tracey Hayes was named principal at Lake Wylie Elementary. She holds a master’s in educational leadership from Winthrop University and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the UNC Charlotte. She joined CMS in 1997 as a teacher at Albemarle Road Elementary and has worked at University Meadows, Elizabeth Lane and McAlpine elementary schools. She served as interim principal at Olde Providence Elementary in the 2010-2011 school year.
Jordy Sparks was named principal at Bruns Avenue Elementary. He began his teaching career in CMS at Bruns in 2005 after teaching for a year in Ohio. He spent two years as a teacher at KIPP Academy in Charlotte before becoming a resident principal at Bruns in the 2010-2011 school year. He holds a bachelor’s degree in integrated social studies from Ohio State University.
Alison Harris was named principal at Ranson Middle School. She began her educational career in Boston as a student support counselor in 2006. She joined Teach For America in 2007 and taught at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology for two years before becoming a resident principal and eighth-grade assistant principal at Bishop Spaugh Community Academy in 2009. She was the assistant principal of instruction at Vance High School in the 2010-2011 school year. Harris is a graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, where she majored in English, and holds a master’s degree in risk and prevention from the Harvard Graduate School in Education in Boston.
