Shaw University takes football crown
Congratulations to the Bears of Shaw University, who took the 2010 CIAA football
championship on Saturday.
Shaw defeated Virginia State University 14-7 for the CIAA crown on Saturday. This makes the third CIAA championship in four years for Shaw.
The Bears surprised the entire CIAA as they upset pre-season favorite Winston-Salem State University on Winston’s home field and kept them out of the championship game.
In the championship game, Shaw used its patented bend-don’t-break defense to keep Virginia State’s offense out of the end zone. Virginia State’s lone touchdown came on a defensive play – a blocked field goal attempt.
Shaw will await this week’s Division II playoff pairings to find out who their next opponent will be.

The JCSU women’s basketball team traveled to Tuskegee University --- the alma mater of head coach Vanessa Taylor – and pulled off a 55-52 season-opening win on Satursday.
Junior guard LaQwesha Gamble finished the night with a game-high 15 points and seven rebounds, including 70 percent (7-of-10) shooting from the free-throw line.
“This was truly a special win; specifically because we start our season with a victory and on the road, but this is also my first time returning and coaching against my alma mater,” Taylor said following the game. “This was a tough win, we traveled a lengthy distance and we have a lot of things to work on in order to improve…but it feels so good to get this victory.”
Of the six teams that make up the CIAA Southern Division, the Lady Golden Bulls are picked to finish fifth this year, ahead of Livingstone College.
The women return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 17, against Queens University at the Ovens Athletic Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
