Shooting victim dies; shooter charged with murder

A man who was shot in what police described as a “moving altercation” between two drivers early Sunday has died from his injuries.

Tariq Hamid El, also known as Bobby Steele, died Tuesday at Carolinas Medical Center.

Charged in his death was 23-year-old Desmon Antoine Curry.

Police said Curry called 911 at about 12:13 a.m. Sunday to report that he had just fired several shots into a car driven by Hamid El. Police said Curry remained on the scene until officers arrived.

The shooting happened near the intersection of North Church Street and West 24th Street. Police offered no further details of the shooting.

Mecklenburg jail records indicate that Curry was arrested in 2010 and charged with resisting a public officer.
