Police this morning identified the victim of a Sunday night shooting in the University area as 18-year-old Jamall Pinkney.

Another teen was charged with his death.

Police said Pinkney was shot in the backyard of a home in the 3700 block of Ottington Place around 9 p.m. Sunday. The house is near University City Boulevard and Interstate 485.

Police initially said they thought the shooting may have been accidental, but after questioning the shooter and witnesses, they charged Byron Sadler, 16, with murder.

Police said they went to the house after receiving a 911 call. The caller said he, the victim and a third person were in the backyard when the shooting happened. Police say the two men stayed at the scene.

Sadler was booked into the Mecklenburg jail after he and others were questioned. Police offered no motive for the killing.

Records show that Sadler was previously arrested in Mecklenburg on Dec. 3 and charged with communicating threats and disorderly conduct.

Pinkney’s death was the city’s 57th homicide this year, one more than in 2009.
