Shot fired during police confrontation
Police today arrested a man just north of uptown Charlotte suspected of firing a shot during a confrontation with police minutes earlier.
Police did not immediately release the suspect’s name. Also arrested was a second man, along with a female.
No one was reported injured in the incident.
According to police reports, the incident happened at 12:32 p.m. in the 500 block of Franklin Avenue, just east of N. Graham Street, while officers were investigating a breaking and entering at a vacant house located at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Catalina Avenue.
Shortly after officers arrived, a CMPD sergeant encountered a man walking along Franklin Avenue. The sergeant instructed the man to speak with another officer.
As the subject was walking away, he allegedly pulled a handgun from his waistband, fired a single shot then ran from the scene. Police were trying to determine if the man meant to fire or whether the gun discharged accidentally.
A man matching the suspect’s description was picked up a short time later. Police said a K-9 unit led officers to a handgun hidden in some bushes.
A second man suspected of running from the scene also was arrested, along with a female who was in the area driving a possible getaway car.
