Good morning! Today the weatherman says we will see partly cloudy skies and a possible stray afternoon thunderstorm with highs in the low 90s.

Did you know today has been designated as Don’t Drive Day? Residents of Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas are being urged to ride the bus, carpool, telecommute, ride the LYNX Light Rail, walk or ride a bike to and from work. Click here to find out how you can win prizes for your participation.

Here’s what’s brewing in the news:

Barack Obama is not president of the hood

Steve Harvey has a message for Tavis Smiley and Cornell West. He says President Barack Obama “is the president of the United States. He is not the president of the hood.” He adds, "If you look at what he is pushing, no one could benefit greater than our community."

Harvey was taking Smiley and West to task for criticizing President Obama’s policies and saying he has not done enough for poor people. Smiley and West are embarking on a national “Poverty Tour” to highlight what they see as deficiencies in the Obama administration. (See video

Harvey says that both men have personal grudges against the president. He said Smiley is upset that Obama didn't attend a Smiley-hosted town hall meeting and sent Mrs. Obama instead. In addition, Harvey claims West is miffed that he wasn’t personally invited to attend the inauguration.

Harvey also took issue with Smiley and West requesting that Obama sit down with them for a couple of days to discuss poverty in America. Harvey said even he doesn’t have time for that; so how can the president? Harvey said: “Who in the hell got 2-3 days for your a**? I ain’t got time to sit down with your monkey behind for two, three days, let alone the president of the United States. We got three damn wars going on, the economy crashing, and we going to sit down with Tavis' a** for three days?”

Listen to more of Harvey’s comments. Do you think Smiley and West have a hidden agenda?

Parking Wars in uptown Charlotte

If you’ve ever tried grabbing a quick lunch uptown, you know parking can be a nightmare. If you’re in a hurry, you will probably have to pick a different location or pay the cost of your lunch to park in a lot or garage because you can’t find an empty spot at a meter. Part of the problem is that many times dozens of spaces are occupied by cabs. That will change next month when the city enacts a new ordinance to keep cab drivers from parking at metered spaces, even if they pay. (Read more)

Sheryl Swoopes comes out of the closet, then …

It’s been six years since WNBA MVP Sheryl Swoopes announced to the world that she was a lesbian and in a relationship with then-girlfriend Alisa Scott. Swoopes recently made another announcement: She’s engaged, to a man. Since the news broke, Swoopes has been labeled everything from “no longer” a lesbian to NSGAA (not so gay after all). Some say she’s confused. One blogger thinks the issue is with the labels. Jasmine Hughes writes: “The problem with these labels and reactions is that they rely solely on her current relationship status to define her identity. To think or say that a person’s current relationship or status permanently defines their orientation shows a lack of knowledge and understanding.” Do you agree? (Read more)
