Storm batters Charlotte, leaving trees, power lines down
Morning commuters can expect major delays today after a powerful thunderstorm blew through Charlotte overnight, leaving in its wake fallen trees and downed power lines.
Police were reporting dozens of roads and intersections either blocked or partially blocked.
All CMS schools were operating on their normal schedules, although approximately 30 reportedly had no electricity. District officials said those schools, all of which had water, would operate “under appropriate emergency procedure, which takes factors such as safety and food service into consideration.”
Downed power lines were blocking both sides of Interstate 485. The closure was in the vicinity of Carolina Place Mall. Nearby N.C. 51 also was closed. Police said I-485 was closed between N.C. 51 and South Boulevard. Authorities said the outerbelt would not reopen until 9:30 or 10 a.m.
Randolph Road, a major thoroughfare for commuters, was partially blocked after a fallen tree took down power lines just east of downtown Charlotte. As of 7:30 a.m., police were on the scene directing traffic but workers had not begun to repair the damage. Morning commuters who use Randolph Road should anticipate significant delays.
Meanwhile, some local residents awoke to find that they are without electricity. At 7:15 a.m., Duke Energy officials reported more than 250,000 outages across the region.
In other instances, residents called police to report that trees had fallen onto their homes. No injuries were reported as of 7:35 a.m.
