Strip mall shooting victim dies, suspect still at large
A man died Wednesday after, police say, he was shot in the head outside a strip mall in east Charlotte early Sunday morning.
Details of the incident were not released until Wednesday evening.
According to police, a gunfight broke out sometime just before 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 1 in the parking lot of the Independence Promenade, located on Independence Boulevard near Idlewild Road.
Police say 22-year-old Olman Mauricio Fuentes Portillo was shot once in the head before crashing his car and coming to a rest in the middle of Independence Boulevard.
Witnesses at the scene said a passenger in Portillo’s car was exchanging gunfire with a passenger in a white Ford F-150 pickup truck as the two vehicles were exiting the parking lot, according to police.
Portillo died Wednesday at Carolinas Medical Center from his injuries.
