A student at Vance High School was tasered by a school resource officer early Tuesday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has confirmed.

The name of the student and officer involved had not been released as of 8 a.m., and the circumstances surrounding the incident were sketchy. But CMS spokeswoman LaTarzja Henry confirmed that the incident did occur. She said the district is still trying to gather facts.

When asked about the incident, CMPD spokeswoman Rosalyn Harrington offered few details.

"There was a fight," she said. "That's about all we know."

Harrington said CMPD officers are permitted to use tasers depending on a suspect's "level of aggression" and the amount of force needed to subdue the suspect.

School resource officers are sworn officers of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department who are assigned to schools for security.

Vance is one of two CMS schools that have seen a spike in arrests this school year. As of February 27, CMS had recorded 61 arrests at Vance, up from 8 the previous year.

The arrests mostly involved fighting or assaults, but some also included charges for marijuana and liquor possession, as well as one for carrying a concealed weapon.

In a meeting with reporters last month, CMS Chief Operating Officer Hugh Hattabaugh said the 662 percent year-over-year increase at Vance was due largely to two incidents involving the arrests of multiple students.

In one, he said, 21 students helped vandalize a mobile unit, and 12 were arrested. The other case involved a fight on campus that initially involved two students. Their friends jumped in, prompting multiple arrests.
