Sunday crash injures 2, driver charged

A Sunday morning car crash in South Charlotte left two people seriously injured and another in police custody with felony charges.

Walter Alexander Zavala, 24, was charged with DWI, driving without a license, and felony serious injury after a car he was driving reportedly flipped into the median near a Light Rail track. The accident occurred in the 3900 block of South Blvd at about 1:33 a.m. Sunday.

Two passengers of his car, 41-year-old Ronald Chafin and 29-year-old Patricia Lopez, were thrown from the car and suffered serious injuries. They were taken to Carolinas Medical Center Main.

Zavala had minor injuries and is being held at the Mecklenburg County Intake Center.
