A Charlotte taxi driver was shot in the head Wednesday afternoon during an apparent robbery that occurred while he was dropping off a fare at the Pressley Ridge Apartments in the southwest part of the city.

The driver, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Police said the shooting was reported at 12:10 p.m. in the 4500 block of Rose Ridge Place.

According to police, the driver was shot before he could put the cab in park. The car continued to roll and came to rest against an apartment building.

After he was shot, the driver climbed out of the cab and collapsed.

Based on initial statements by witnesses, detectives are looking for the driver’s three passengers -- two black males and one white male -- who were seen running from the cab after the shooting.
