T.D. Jakes: Teachers and preachers must work together
Teachers, clergy and parents must do a better job of working together if African American students are to become successful leaders of tomorrow, Bishop T.D. Jakes
recently told a group of educators.
In a 40-minute, keynote speech to the National Alliance of Black School Educators, a Washington, D.C.-based group that works to advance academic proficiency for African-American students, Jakes said clergy must talk about education more from the pulpit.
"We need more clergy talking about education,” he said. “We need more people in the pulpit talking about parenting. If we are to really achieve these goals, then the silence between the faith community and academic community must be broken -- particularly in the African-American community -- because there is no institution that sees more of the parents every week than the church."
Jakes delivered his remarks on Thursday, Nov. 18, to a packed crowd of educators at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
