Teen driver killed in accident
A senior at North Mecklenburg High School was killed Tuesday evening in a car accident in north Charlotte. Two others were seriously injured.
Police say 18-year-old Kiara Wright was attempting a left hand turn from DeArmon Road onto Browne Road when she pulled her 1994 Mazda 626 directly into the path of a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup.
The truck struck the driver-side door of Wright’s vehicle. The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Wright was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, where she died hours later.
Xavier Joplin, 19, and Cameron Brown, 21, were riding in the car with Wright. Both were hospitalized with serious injuries.
Jeremiah Aponte, 31, who was driving the truck, suffered minor injury. He was treated and released at Presbyterian Hospital in Huntersville.
After Wright’s death, her friends mourned her loss on Facebook and Twitter.
“May the Lord bless us and keep us strong in this sad time of grief,” wrote one classmate on Twitter. “RIP Kiara Wright.”
Joplin, who police said was sitting in the front seat beside Wright at the time of the wreck, posted a message on Facebook early Wednesday morning, saying he loved Wright and planned to marry her someday.
“The girl of my dreams, the girl i loved wit all my heart is (gone) foreva,” he wrote. “But will neva be forgotten.”
The crash is currently under investigation.
