A Charlotte youth who last week celebrated his 17th birthday died today at Carolinas Medical Center after being struck by two cars while trying to cross The Plaza on foot.

Police identified the victim as Rayshawn Travon Leon Rainey.

According to police, the accident occurred in the 4100 block of The Plaza.

Rainey had crossed two inbound lanes of traffic and was attempting to cross the outbound lanes when he was struck by a Ford Escort. The impact caused Rainey to fall into the outside lane, where he was struck by a Toyota Avalon.

Police said both drivers stayed with Rainey until help arrived, and no charges were filed.
