Now is your chance to tell the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board what you think of its plans to expand, merge and close some schools.

The board will begin a series of public hearings on Thursday, Oct. 7. Each forum will address recommendations specific to the area where the forum is held. No sign-up is required to attend.

The board has proposed to merge, expand or close selected schools to save money and increase academic performance. Not everyone, however, is happy with the plan.

School Board Chairman Eric Davis promises that CMS will be listening to what the public has to say. "If we have to make changes, we need the public to tell us how we could make it work best," he was quoted as saying on CharlotteObserver.com.

To guarantee everyone at the forums has a chance to be heard, attendees will be broken up into small groups for an hour-long discussion of the schools involved. That will be followed by an open-mike session.
All the public's recommendations will be recorded and posted on the CMS Web site, district officials said.
