The Sugaw Creek Jaguars are soccer champs
Hats off to the Sugaw Creek Jaguars. They are the Mecklenburg County 8u Soccer Champions after beating the PAL Scorpions 2-0 on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Harrisburg Sports Complex.
This victory caps a great season for the Jaguars, who finished the regular season with just one loss. Equally impressive, many of the boys had never played soccer before this year.
The team is lead by veteran soccer coach Lord Umazar, who won Mecklenburg County soccer championships four years in a row from 1984-1988.
"To have had success with my own children, nieces and nephews in the 80's and to be back coaching my grandchildren and grandnephews to another championship is a blessing,” he said.
Key stops by goalies CJ Brown and Jalen Peeler left the Scorpions scoreless, and the Jaguars were impressive on both sides of the field.
"This is a goal we set last season," after losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs, assistant coach Aswad Umazar explained. “We were determined to build on the success of last season and win a championship this year."
The Jaguars returned a bulk of the team from last year, including co- captains Peeler, Brown and Pedro Saldana, along with twin playmakers Jahmir Brown and Marcus Brown. But it was the addition of defensive powerhouse JR Lumsden and Jaesean Flowers, sweeper and key goal maker Christian Reed, offensive anchors Sirahj Houseton, Nicholas Sanchez and Nic Long that powered the Jaguars to victory and bought another soccer championship back to Sugaw Creek Recreation Center.
