Scholarships awarded to 3 Qcity students
Three Qcity students will be awarded $2,500 college scholarships next week by the Nielsen Co, which tracks the nation’s television viewing habits.
The students are:
Jameelia Cook of West Mecklenburg High, who wants a job at Microsoft or Toshiba; Samone Weathers of E.E. Waddell, who wants to be a journalist; and Janel Harrison of West Charlotte High, who loves computer technology and hopes to attend the UNC Charlotte.
Each of the three high school seniors also will receive a Netbook computer at Tuesday announcement at West Mecklenburg High School.
"Helping kids get to college helps our whole community," said Curtis Carroll who leads the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Achievement Zone. "These students are on their way to a promising future."
The scholarship recipients share at least a 3.5 grade-point-average, plans to attend a four-year college or university and interests in technology, information systems, media or communications.
Nielsen in recent months has worked in Charlotte with African-American and Latino communities to increase participation in Nielsen surveys
