Tom Joyner is getting a new home on Charlotte radio
If you’re a fan of the “Tom Joyner Morning Show” and have your radio set to WQNC-FM (“My 92.7”), get ready for a switch.
In the next month or so, Joyner’s popular laugh-a-thon will move to WNOW-FM (105.3), a station recently purchased by Radio One, which also owns “My 92.7,” Joyner’s current home in Charlotte.
The move is part of a local shakeup for Radio One that will see “My 92.7” adopt a new format, which hasn’t been disclosed. When Radio One bought WNOW, they changed its format from regional Mexican to old-school R&B.
Radio One is looking to better compete in the Charlotte market against the more powerful CBS stations, WBAV-FM (“V” 101.9) and WPEG-FM (“Power 98” 97.9) in the so-called “urban” format.
Gary Weiss, regional vice president for the Carolinas for Radio One, declined to discuss the future format for “My 92.7” but told Washburn he thinks the plan “will be well received.”
