"Top doctor" joins Carolinas Medical Center

Dr. Charles Bridges, a heart surgeon and scientist, has been selected to chair the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center.

Bridges joins the CMC and Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute team from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was professor of surgery and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital.

He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University at age 19 with a degree in engineering and applied physics. He continued with graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology while in Harvard medical school, where he graduated with honors.

Bridges has more than 100 published manuscripts, chapters and reviews and has been recognized as a “top doctor” in thoracic surgery in Philadelphia Magazine for eight consecutive years and is listed among the Top Doctors in America.

Scott Gartlan has been named executive director of Charlotte Teachers Institute (CTI), an educational partnership among UNC Charlotte, Davidson College and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS).

The institute was formed to strengthen teaching and learning in public schools. Each year about 100 CMS teachers enroll in CTI seminars.

Gartlan taught in area schools for five years. At the Cannon School, he taught AP psychology and honors ethics and was the school’s character education coordinator. At Charlotte Country Day, he taught AP and IB Psychology. Gartlan also served as program coordinator for curriculum development at the Cahn Fellows Program for Distinguished New York City Principals at Teachers College at Columbia University.

He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from Washington College and an Ed.M. in education leadership from Teachers College at Columbia University. He currently is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership from UNC Charlotte.

Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx will lead a delegation of local business and civic leaders to China Nov. 10-19. The trip is sponsored by the Charlotte International Cabinet (CIC) and will focus on economic development and expanding Chinese investment in Charlotte. This will be Foxx’s first international trip since taking office in December 2009. His travel expenses will be paid by CIC, a business group that promotes Charlotte as an international city and serve as a resource to foster international relations.

Mark Kemp has been named editor-in-chief of Creative Loafing in Charlotte, succeeding Carlton Hargro, who announced his resignation on July 28. Kemp was Creative Loafing's editor from 2005 to 2006. A graduate of East Carolina University, he has served as senior music editor of Rolling Stone, vice president of music editorial for MTV Networks, executive editor of the '90s alternative-music magazine Option, and entertainment editor of The Charlotte Observer.
