Trailblazing S.C. lawmaker freezes to death alone

The life and career of Juanita Goggins were full of firsts:

  • The first black woman elected to the S.C. legislature.
  • The first to serve on the U.S. Civil Rights Commission.
  • The first to serve as a state delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

Earlier this month, at age 75, the former Rock Hill resident was found frozen to death in a rented house four miles from the S.C. Capitol in Columbia.

Friend and associates say Goggins, who once served as president of the Juanita W. Goggins School of Excellence, had become increasingly reclusive and refused help.
