Trial begins in murder case
A Mecklenburg jury heard opening argument Thursday in the first-degree murder trial of Anthony Earmond Marcus, who is accused of fatally shooting a Charlotte mom as she and her family returned from watching fireworks at Carowinds.
In the state’s opening argument, Mecklenburg Assistant District Attorney Rob Corbett said Marcus admitted to killing Olivia Sigmon in 2004, according to the Charlotte Observer.
In a crime that shocked much of Charlotte, Sigmon, 52, was shot to death at the intersection of Tuckaseegee and Berryhill roads. Police said that earlier that evening, two men had stolen a 1996 Geo Metro, which they crashed at the intersection just as Sigmon, her daughter, a 10-year-old friend and Sigmon’s boyfriend were returning from the amusement park.
Police say the men approached Sigmon’s car, ordered her out then one of them shot her. Police made no arrest in the case for two years.
