Two executives will spend the next two years working with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools under a two-year residency program designed to improve urban education.

Accepted into The Broad Residency in Urban Education program are: Kathryn Block, a former executive with the Campbell Soup Co., and Rashidah Lopez Morgan, a former manager for Wachovia and Microsoft.

The Broad Residency program seeks early career executives with management experience and advanced business degrees. During their two-year commitment, residents work in urban school districts to improve central office management practices so that more money reaches the classroom, teachers receive effective support and students receive a quality education.

Since its inception, the national program has placed 215 executives in 32 school districts and 23 public charter school management organizations nationwide. Nine out of ten Broad Resident have stayed in the field of urban education, according to program officials.

Block, who holds an MBA from the University of Michigan, was assigned to work as director in auxiliary services for CMS. She will help develop and implement a district-wide quality management system. At Campbell Soup Company, she was responsible for profit and loss management, operational budgeting, strategic business planning and high-performance team development. “Every child has a right to a high quality education that elevates and inspires them to become their best selves,” Block said in a statement. “Becoming a Broad Resident is my opportunity to give back and help advance this worthy endeavor.”

Morgan, who also holds an MBA from the University of Michigan, was assigned to work as director of succession planning and talent development at CMS. While at Wachovia, she last worked as a vice president of debit and pre-paid marketing and was a product manager at Microsoft. She also was a senior marketing manager at American Express and as an analyst with Accenture. “As a beneficiary of a strong public education, I feel obligated to pay back the investment my own teachers made in me by helping to improve the system when our children need it the most,” she said.
