UNC students may have to wait longer to graduate

It may take longer for students attending public universities across North Carolina to graduate.

Next year, thousands of courses may be eliminated due to state budget cuts. If so, many students will be unable to get the classes they need in the right sequence to graduate on time.

That is part of the grim news received this week by UNC governors as they were briefed on what severe budget cuts could mean for the 16-campus university system.

The Herald Sun reports, a 15 percent cut in state funding would result the elimination of 9,000  courses and 240,000 class seats. It would also mean the loss of 3,200 staff positions.

Leaders at UNC-Charlotte estimate that such a cut would increase the average time for a student to earn an undergraduate degree by a full semester.
