UNCF raises money for struggling seniors
With the economy still struggling, the United Negro College Fund today (10/25) kicked off a national campaign to help financially strapped seniors at member schools complete their degrees.
The Campaign for Essential Student Aid is an offshoot of last year’s Campaign for Emergency Student Aid, which raised nearly $7 million in emergency funds and helped about 4,000 students nationwide.
This year’s goal is to raise at least $4 million.
Marilyn Baldwin Richards, UNCF’s development director in the Charlotte area, said the economy has left a large number of seniors struggling to graduate.
“The recessionary conditions linger,” she said.
Richards said priority for the current campaign would be given to students scheduled to graduate in December 2010 and May 2011.
An estimated 3,552 North Carolina students are studying at UNCF schools.

Financially struggling students who attend UNCF schools may apply for assistance through their respective financial aid offices.
