The University of South Carolina Gamecocks are on the verge of losing their only black member on the board of trustees, a situation that is putting the 2010 football season in jeopardy, according to reports.

South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus chairman Rep. David Weeks said in an Associated Press story that members of the community want black South Carolina football recruits to reconsider playing for the university. This group of recruits includes top-ranked Marcus Lattimore, a running back who chose USC over Auburn.

Alton Hyatt Jr. is challenging for the seat currently held by Leah B. Moody, the University of South Carolina's only black trustee, attorney Leah B. Moody. If Hyatt were elected, the 22-member Board of Trustees would lack a black presence, making USC the only school in the Southeastern Conference without a black board member.

According to NCAA rules, if a player has signed a letter of intent with a school but withdraws after a certain period, that player loses a year of eligibility.
