Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball coach Vanessa Taylor has been named Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Coach of the Week.

Taylor and the Lady Golden Bulls are 6-0 after victories last week over Queens University of Charlotte (61-54) and Belmont Abbey College (68-56). Johnson C. Smith is the lone unbeaten team in the CIAA Southern Division and starts the season 6-0 for the second consecutive season.

JCSU announced last month that Taylor also was chosen to participate in the 2010 NCAA Women Coaches Academy in Denver. The academy provides skills training for coaches at all levels.

Taylor is entering her 10th season as head coach at JCSU. She has a record of 173-100. She was named CIAA Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1999.

"I truly appreciate being recognized by the conference, and I share this honor with my coaching staff and team," Taylor said in a statement released by the university.

The JCSU women begin conference play Dec. 13 against St. Paul’s College. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Brayboy Gymnasium.
